Music at Sedgehill Academy

Music is in our soul at Sedgehill Academy...

“Sedgehill, a school with a welcoming and inclusive ethos. Where the teachers care for our future as much as we do, and encourage us to stretch and develop ourselves at any given chance. Vocalize is a clear of example this; It provides you with tremendous amounts of self-belief, before you know it  you’re undertaking things you never thought you’d have had the confidence to do. Vocalize has really encouraged me to develop a true passion of mine, singing and songwriting; with the exceptional equipment in the studio and Mr Gilbert’s guidance, I’m able to do just that. We are all extremely proud of the fact that Lewisham Music have named a room after us, it’s fantastic to have that recognition.” Year 12 student

We are extremely proud of our rich and successful musical heritage, music plays a fundamental role in our commitment to supporting strong development of character and providing students with a rich and broad education.

Sedgehill Academy students have performed at the Barbican, London Palladium and at the Cadogan Hall. Our students have also performed with Il Divo, Michael Ball, Nicola Benedetti and the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain.

We also have our very own Musician-In-Residence, Andy Gilbert, a successful artist, in his own right who coaches students in music and song writing, and mentors our incredible school choir, Vocalize, who have performed at Buckingham Palace and The Royal Albert Hall.

We are one of only 17 schools in the country who offer free musical instrument lessons as part of the prestigious Andrew Lloyd Webber MISST programme.

Currently over 300 students play an instrument at Sedgehill Academy with at least 100 regularly attending a weekly ensemble rehearsal.

Vocalize

Inspired by the Live Lounge all stars version of ‘Times like these’ Sedgehill Academy school choir "Vocalize" have been incredibly busy during lockdown. They each recorded their parts individually from home and put them together to create this stunning piece.

Our school choir, Vocalize, was formed in 2010 and has been an integral part of the academy's musical life ever since, performing at Buckingham Palace, The Royal Albert Hall and many other top UK venues. Ranging from 11-17 year olds, the group and have regular studio sessions during school time to develop their recording & song writing skills.

Some ex Vocalize members have continued with music after leaving school working in the music industry as professionals signing record and publishing deals, most notably Amy Kabba, being Grammy nominated for her number 1 duet with MNEK  ’Need you 100%’.  Also past band members of Vocalize are now session musicians playing with artists such as Stormzy , Emelie Sande and Mabel.

Moses Boyd, another ex Sedgehill student, is now one of the most talked about jazz drummers in the world and recently featured on Later with Jools Holland as the main guest.
