Studying at our Sixth Form is about much more than spending another two years at school. We are devoted to giving our students an opportunity to explore subjects in greater depth, to discover new talents that they never knew they possessed and to develop skills that they can draw on throughout life. We also know how important it is to give our young people proper advice on all the options they have ahead of them to enable them to make the right choice regarding their next steps.

Excellence

To aid us in our pursuit of excellence, we insist on the highest standards of professional behaviour from our students. These are expressed in our Sixth Form Habits which include being on time for every lesson, being prepared for every lesson, meeting all deadlines, being polite and working productively at all times. We are relentless in our pursuit of the small details to ensure that every student achieves their best.

Ambition

Our sixth form ethos is ‘Building for Success’. We want to build students who push themselves, not settling for anything but their best. We want to build students who believe in themselves and realise their potential. We want to build students who are successful in their sixth form studies and – perhaps more importantly – beyond. Whatever our students decide to do next, we want them to aim high.

Confidence

The education students receive at Sedgehill sixth form is designed to make them confident learners, sure of their knowledge and skills. Whatever they go on to do after sixth form, they will be more successful if they are able to believe in their abilities. In addition to academic confidence, we believe it is important for our students to develop a good knowledge of current affairs and their historical context. Through our tutorial programme students, study academic texts designed to further their knowledge and understanding of the world around them. The broad knowledge students receive from this programme helps prepare them for university study. Students also have a weekly assembly on a whole range of topics linked to current affairs and our school ethos.

Independence

The biggest change in the step up to sixth form study is the amount of independent study required. Homework is set weekly for all subjects and it is expected that the amount of time students spend doing independent study and homework is equal to or greater than the amount of time spent studying in lesson. The majority of sixth form students at Sedgehill have at least five 50 minute study periods a week where students study silently in an environment similar to a University library. Our Sixth Form study area and library are fully equipped with all the resources students need to study effectively: computers, course texts, reference books, academic journals, and careers and Higher Education information.

Direction

We are proud to be a school that knows its students and families well. We believe that student success depends on a three-way partnership between the student, the family and the school. We want students’ families to be actively involved in their education, and we hold parent information evenings and provide reports for parents every half term. This ongoing partnership allows us to help our students make the best plans for their futures.

Our dedicated Careers Coordinator helps each student decide the best path for them, whether that is higher education, an apprenticeship, employment or a gap year. This is particularly valuable when it comes to university applications, as we offer personalised advice and guidance for every step of the process, from choosing courses and writing personal statements to applying for student finance. We want every student leaves Sedgehill Sixth Form knowing what they want to do and how they are going to achieve it.
